A Note on Cake
People ask whether it is disappointing to see sixteen hours of work cut into pieces and disappear from party plates in a matter of minutes. To me, it is the essence of gift-giving. It is possible to order a gift on Amazon without a touch or a word, with money you have never seen, and receive a texted ‘thanks’ you do not hear. Very abstract. But the cakes are all personal and made for a particular person.
There is a moment, or an hour, when they are set on the party table, when they can breathe and allow memories to brew, so when it is cut, a small slice of magic will remain when the last of the cake is gone. They are some of my favorite gifts.
