The First Quilt Cake

The first time I made a quilt cake for Mary Ellen was for her 70th birthday. She had previously asked me to create a form for the “Spool” quilt pattern. I used a miniature version of this to create the flat marzipan quilt before laying the quilt over the cake. The spools give some form to the cake and also become candle holders at cake lighting time.
